The Palmetto Opera 2014-2015 Season

  • JEANNIE BUTLER RECEIVES PARTNERS IN EXCELLENCE AWARD

Opera Volunteers International Bestows Coveted Award on Palmetto Opera Volunteer

The Palmetto Opera began in 2001 with a group of motivated enthusiasts and a goal to bring professional opera into South Carolina.  Jeannie Stier Butler has served three terms as Palmetto Opera Board Vice President as well as two years as treasurer.  In recognition of her efforts, Opera Volunteers International honored Jeannie by presenting her with the prestigious Partners in Excellence Award. This award, one of only four given throughout North America, was presented to Jeannie at a special reception on June 19th, along with a proclamation from Mayor of Columbia Steve Benjamin.  Other awards were presented at the Opera Volunteers International Awards Dinner in Washington D.C. on May 8th. This event was part of the Opera America/OVI 2015 Opera Conference.

Financial sustainability of the Palmetto Opera is a major goal and Jeannie, a seasoned and careful numbers specialist among artsy entertainment types, has been indispensable to the effort. She keeps the books and keeps everyone on track. Not only has she demonstrated excellent leadership skills, but she is equally enthusiastic about helping plan events, keeping mailing lists, fundraising, searching for volunteers and advocating opera to anyone who will listen. She is passionate about establishing a regular grand opera season in Columbia and also about offering full productions that combine rich international, national and South Carolina opera talent, musicians and dancers.

Jeannie Stier Butler is a native of Columbia, S.C..  She received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Dallas and her master degree in environmental science at the University of Texas at Dallas.  She taught at the Corp of Engineers in Dallas and was a professor at Rogers State University in Oklahoma.  She began her real estate career in Columbia in 1966 with Coldwell Bank and has been with RE-MAX Real Estate Services since 1991.

  • Were you there?

On October 4, 2014, the Palmetto Opera singers were featured at the 7th Annual Italian Festival and Bocce Tournament held at the Robert Mills House in downtown Columbia.  Palmetto Opera’s artistic director and Tenor Walter Cuttino performed with Baritone Eric Kessler, Soprano Tina Stallard and accompanist Claudio Olivera and entertain with some of the world’s best-loved arias. Those attending enjoyed great Italian foods, dancing, an Italian market and the Palmetto Opera singers!

Gallery 80808/Vista Studios was transformed into a unique, operatic atmosphere on Sept. 18, for Jasper Magazine’s autumn release. Palmetto Opera’s Walter Cuttino was joined by Diana Amos & Erik Kesler for a one-night-only performance of highlights from Puccini’s La Bohème, as well as hits from familiar musicals. Artwork on display in the gallery included classical oil paintings by realist painter / Palmetto Opera board member Tish Lowe along with an installation by fiber artist Susan Lenz and murals by graffiti artist Michael Krajewski.

    Puccini, The Mikado & More…
East met West at the Columbia Museum of Art on April 4, 2014. We had a memorable evening of Art and Music with a performance of famous arias and popular Broadway classics of an operatic tradition.  Headlined by three American performers with long and successful careers on European stages, the audience was amazed by the caliber of talent and transfixed by this transcendent experience.

Carmen was a huge success! Teatro Lirico d'Europa's performance on March 1, 2014 at the Koger Center was a spectacular production, both well-reviewed and well-enjoyed by all who attended!

On January 30, Teatro Lirico d'Europa gave a magical performance in 'A Tribute to Pavarotti', a collection of Pavarotti's best-loved arias followed by an elegant meet-the-cast party.
